First things first, 2 areas in your home add value or lose value better than any other kitchens and bathrooms. Buyers of houses always consider these to be the most expensive areas to deal with if they are in a poor state.
It doesn't have to be expensive to look good and be very functional, when you go to many bathroom showrooms the prices are daunting to say the very least.
By way of example, the rather lovely shower bath that we fitted to one bathroom including a curved screen and whirlpool was quoted at over £2000 by a local showroom, we purchased it online for just over £1000, the exact same product delivered to our home. But what if there's a problem I hear you cry, well in this case there was, a tiny dink out of the bath that only showed when it got dusty during installation. Well a engineer for Ideal Standard was with us in 24 hours and the bath was replaced within 72. I am not sure if the service would be any better from a local showroom. One thing to bear in mind is that online sellers often have far more clout with manufacturers as they are selling many more of their product than Jo Blogs bathroom supplies.

plumbworld are probably the biggest of the lot, we have used them, they delivered when they said they would and were professional through out, they sent goods that arrived damaged (toilet bowl) and had it replaced within 2 days
Screwfix Direct The sell everything next day delivery people a lot cheaper than most DIY warehouses they also do contract quality bathrooms at good prices, backed by probably the best customer service and returns service on the web. I once bought 12 light bulbs from these people, one came broken they just sent me another dozen.
Victoriaplumb.com Bathroom Super Store One of the biggest, however, not in my experience very keenly priced overall they do however have their moments.
B & Q Whilst no great lover of B & Q they do offer good value bathroom suites
