House burglaries

• The average length of time a burglar will spend in premises is between three and five minutes. The average cost for that period is £2,200
• One in five burglaries happen because doors and windows were left unsecured
• One in five burglaries happen because garden tools and ladders are left unsecured, making it easier to attack the home
• Have adequate dawn to dusk lighting
• Ensure all doors and windows have security locks, and use them
• Make sure your front and back doors have at least two locks on them, of which one should be a mortis or deadlock
• Get an alarm
• If you're going out for any length of time have lights on a timer switch
• Even if you're home make sure you close all windows and doors at night
• Don't leave keys on the first flat surface - they can be stolen through letterboxes or windows
• Make sure cat and dog flaps are lockable
• If you're going on holiday, cancel milk and newspapers and place a box under the letter box to hide build up of mail.
